Registration is now open for the 13th Speech Synthesis Workshop (SSW13), the field's premier venue for breakthrough research and collaboration.
Scaling down: Sustainable synthesis for language diversity
This year's theme tackles a critical challenge: while neural TTS has achieved remarkable quality, advances have concentrated on high-resource languages. SSW13 examines how to democratize synthesis technology across linguistic diversity while addressing computational sustainability.
Progress can no longer be measured solely by benchmark metrics. As models become more sophisticated and expensive, fundamental questions emerge about resource allocation, environmental impact, and technological equity.
Event details
Dates: August 24-26, 2025
Location: Campus Fryslân, University of Groningen, Leeuwarden, Netherlands
Format: Satellite workshop to Interspeech 2025
The three-day program maintains SSW's traditional single-track format, fostering intimate discussions that drive innovation. Expect technical presentations, poster sessions, and demonstrations showcasing cutting-edge research.

Why SSW matters
For three decades, SSW has been the primary venue where synthesis research evolved—from refining concatenative methods to pioneering statistical approaches to advancing neural architectures. The single-track format ensures every participant engages with the full research spectrum, enabling deep technical discussions that shape the field's direction.
SSW13 positions itself strategically as the field grapples with sustainability, linguistic equity, and accessibility. The convergence of technical advancement, environmental consciousness, and linguistic diversity reflects broader shifts in how we measure research impact. This isn't just an academic gathering—it's where theoretical discussions advance to practical implementation. Complete information at the official website.
Blizzard Challenge 2025
This year's challenge focuses on Bildts synthesis—a language spoken by ~500 people in the northern Netherlands province of Fryslân. Beyond technical advancement, this contributes directly to language preservation efforts, exemplifying synthesis for truly low-resource languages.
